What is Love? (White BG) by DarthSuki What is Love? (White BG) by DarthSuki
In efforts to help my school's GSA, I've designed this simple poster in efforts to help offer the simple truth that love will always be love, no matter the sex, gender, identity or orientation of the people in its powerful and passionate grip.

It's also the first poster design in my (Simple as That). series. I hope to create a further few more posters like this to help my school and community become more accepting and understanding of others.

And of course, others are more than free to use this poster in their own schools/communities; I simply ask that they contact me so I know what/where it's being used. I can send the full-sized design to you then.

Black Background Version Here

Inspired by Haddaway's song, "What is Love?"

Considering the art is supposed to represent the acceptance of love between all genders, assuming both parties are non-related, of consenting age and are humans, I don't think this is the artwork to pose those particular questions at <:T

I'd like to assume most people wouldn't really think those things are morally correct (outside of incest, but that's an entirely different debate I'm happily neutral on) but kudos for keeping those current moral issues in mind!

Let's open the can of worms.  Rejecting any argument founded on emotions and relying solely on definable facts.  Why are incest, pedophilia, and necrophilia wrong?

Though social stigma and emotion do play large parts into why these three things are inherently wrong (though I hesitate to use that word, because I believe the word 'wrong' still holds way too much of an emotional bias). Instead, I think I'll use the word 'dangerous' because, for two of them, the dangers are far more immediate than the third.

Lets start with necrophilia, perhaps the easiest to prove how the emotional and social stigma is based in some fair amount of fact. Necrophilia is defined as 'sexual intercourse with or attraction toward corpses'. Lets begin it with the literal understanding of it's meaning: sexual relations with a corpse. Depending on whether the aforementioned corpse is recently or long deceased, there are a number of health issues that can arise from having sexual relations to a corpse. The human body is hose to thousands of bacteria colonies, all of which remain for a time after the body itself has died. Though they may die themselves, a number of other bacteria--the ones responsible for the actual decomposition of the body--takes their place. This isn't even going into the fact that a host of insects are also responsible for decomposition of some bodies as well. The social taboo in this case is based is based on health concerns for whomever is partaking in this activity.

Now for the second one, paedophilia. This one is a little easier, especially if we’re going by facts alone. So what does it mean? It is defined as ‘sexual feelings directed toward children.' Alright, so what is the generally accepted age of a child? A child is defined as ‘a young human being below the age of puberty or below the legal age of majority.’ So, a child is someone below the age of puberty. So paedophilia is the sexual attraction of children, typically beneath the age of puberty. Puberty occurs typically between 12-14 for females, and 10-16 for males.

The fact-based reason that this is wrong lies in the fact that having sexual relations with a child would be emotionally, physically, and mentally traumatizing for them. Remember, those ages above are for THE LIMIT OF PUBERTY, and the majority of those with this fetish will go for children of younger ages, anywhere from toddlerhood up, and there are cases of some with infants. I don’t think I have to describe the physical trauma alone that would come with an adult trying to take advantage of a child, a child who is far smaller, weaker, and with a barely-developed emotional spectrum. Simply put, it’s dangerous; physically, emotionally, and mentally.

Incest is the only case where I disagree with the taboo and remain neutral on. Incest is defined as ‘sexual relations between people classed as being too closely related to marry each other.’ The attraction of someone they are closely related to. This is considered socially taboo on one reason only, and it is based in fair, reasonable biological fact that our ancestors did their best to avoid. The problem lies in the act of reproduction--if two people of close relation have a child, that child doesn’t have nearly as much of a variety in their gene pool, and thus has the higher chance of inheriting recessive, dangerous genes. This is called inbreeding, where the children of two closely-related mates has a higher probability of inheriting birth defects. This was very much a problem long ago, when our race’s only goal was to breed, procreate and make a bigger new generation than the one before. But now, it’s simply an instinctual byproduct. As long as the two are consenting adults and don’t plan on having children (or at least, not having children through multiple generations of incest), there truly is nothing factually wrong with it. I personally have no attraction to my brother, but I’m not going to judge anyone who is--it’s not my life, and it’s not hearing either of the adults involved.

If you have issues with my answer or need more clarification, feel free to let me know and I'll happily clarify further.

I'd been hoping this debate would last longer, but I can't think of any benefits.

As for incest, I'd say the defects are enough to justify not doing that.
It seems cruel to risk the integrity of a child, when you know how to avoid it.

I don't personally think defects alone justify keeping people from having a relationship with someone they're closely related too. This is particularly true for couples who have absolutely no plans on having children, there are all sorts of options otherwise such as adoption which would in sense defeat the issue that people instinctively dislike with it. That's why I don't particularly care either way. This is especially true for incest couples in fandom, since they are usually the same sex and can't have biological children anyway.

Translesbian is a mtf that is attracted solely to girls. It's probably not a very common term, as I only recently discovered it myself, but it is a thing. Glad to widen your awareness, friend!

As long you are adult, 'sane' and not related etc, why not love? regardless of the flavor?

Indeed... and Canada here is not always so much more open than our southern neighboors.

I don't understand why you placed transgender individuals on an image about romantic relationships. It's not that I don't appreciate you attempting to be inclusive, it's just that if somebody is transgender, it literally has zero to do with their sexual preference. It seems really out of place, is what I'm saying.

Oh, I do understand that. I was just trying to include the idea that love doesn't have to come from the sex organs you are born with, as much as the ones you wind up being attractive to (You can be physically male, identify as a female, and fall in love with another male, or vice versa). More or less, it was easier to symbolize it like I did on the poster, than putting up the diverse possibilities you can get with something so fluid as gender identity and such. I completely understand what you mean, however c:

Oh, alright. JUST wanted to make sure you understood what it actually was; there's a lot of people out there who actually think transgenderism is the same kind of thing as being gay; that it's a sexual orientation or something.

only thing I don't like about a lot of these pics is that they only show couples. I would love to see some that showed multi-partner relationships (mmf or ffm or ffmm or mmff, etc.)

I can understand what you're getting at with polygamy vs monogamy, but unfortunately I don't think (America at least) is ready to embrace it so quickly just yet. Hopefully in the future of our children and their children, perhaps then it will be as openly accepted as some wish it to be c: I like to think of it as baby steps--the population can only take a few major social movements at a time XD

Very true. I grew up with a lesbian grandmother and her partner, who I also called my grandma. It was never an odd or weird concept to me, I just accepted it and thought it was natural. Of course when i was older and knew what a lesbian was, i still thought it was normal. So I've always been a supporter. You can't choose who you fall in love with. I also point out that homosexuality is actually a genetic mutation, and you are quite literally born that way. so when people say "that's not God's doing" I always laugh and so or really? You say God makes no mistakes, and you are literally made that way since conception, so how is it going against God exactly? He made humans black, white, and all the other races, he made male and female, so why not heterosexual and homosexual? That's my logic behind the religous aspect of it anyway. ^,.,^

Partnership and Love is generally made by two things, sexual and romantic attraction. You need romantic attraction to be in love, but the sexual part is regarded as an extra bit. Most people have sexual relationships as much as romantic, but those who identify as Asexual simply don't feel the same desire for sex as others do. It's just how we're all built c:
